Learning Outcomes

All learners who complete the required outputs will earn a Level II Badge.

Technical Skills & Equipment Proficiency

• Identify the functions, hazards and requirements of Makerspace equipment

• Explain correct operating procedures for each tool and machine

• Demonstrate safe and effective operation of all required equipment

• Differentiate between common equipment issues and appropriate troubleshooting steps

• Evaluate equipment condition and determine when maintenance or escalation is needed

• Create training demonstrations or instructions to teach peers proper equipment use

Safety Knowledge & Risk Management

• Recall all Makerspace safety rules, emergency procedures and PPE requirements

• Summarize potential hazards associated with specific tools and processes

• Apply safety protocols consistently during all operations

• Inspect the space to identify unsafe behaviors or conditions

• Judge when intervention is required to maintain safety

• Develop strategies to promote a strong culture of safety among users

Peer Instruction & Mentorship

• Recognize common student challenges with equipment and processes

• Describe concepts in clear, accessible language suitable for novice users

• Model proper techniques and workflows for students during training

• Assess student skill levels to adjust teaching approaches

• Provide constructive feedback that improves student performance

• Design inclusive, supportive learning experiences in the makerspace

Communication & Customer Service

• Recall expectations for professional and respectful communication

• Explain Makerspace policies and procedures clearly to users

• Use effective interpersonal communication when assisting students

• Analyze student questions and needs to determine best support strategies

• Evaluate interactions to ensure clarity, accuracy and professionalism

• Compose clear documentation of incidents, issues, or equipment errors

Professional Conduct & Responsibility

• Explain the responsibilities and expectations of the Super User role.

• Perform all shift duties reliably and independently

• Monitor the work environment to identify organizational or operational issues

• Prioritize tasks and decisions to support efficient Makerspace operations

• Develop solutions to improve organization, efficiency or student support

Makerspace Operations & Problem-Solving

• Identify common operational issues and user needs in the Makerspace 

• Interpret patterns in equipment use or student questions to anticipate challenges

• Implement appropriate troubleshooting procedures for routine problems

• Analyze complex or unusual issues to determine causes and next steps

• Recommend actions or escalations based on equipment condition or safety concerns

• Propose enhancements to makerspace workflows, training or operations

Assessment is completed by faculty using a rubric designed by engineering faculty. Students receive feedback from the rubric evaluators.
