School of Communications Student Experience

School of Communications students create a vibrant community, participating in more than 12 student-run clubs and organizations, such as The Chronicle, Q30-TV, WQAQ FM, Quinnipiac Film Society and the Quinnipiac Bobcats Sports Network. They immerse themselves in student competitions, including the College Media Association Pinnacle, the New England Society of News Editors, and the Society of Professional Journalists. And our unique Quinnipiac in LA program is a year-round learning experience in Los Angeles for our undergraduate and graduate students that combines coursework with an internship in the entertainment industry, journalism, digital design, advertising and many other areas.

Quinnipiac sends a team to Super Bowl LVII

Five students from Quinnipiac’s Ability Media and Quinnipiac Bobcats Sports Network geared up to cover the events leading up to Super Bowl LVII in Arizona.

The students worked to cover players and celebrities who participate in the festivities, producing a variety of multimedia content and a daily broadcast for those with disabilities.

“Our mission is to bring representation of people with different abilities to all forms of social media,” said Aaron Roberts ’22, MFA ’23, director of operations for Ability Media. “We strive to be inclusive and with a staff of students who are differently abled.”

“Quinnipiac has amazing, student-led content organizations, like the Quinnipiac Film Society, Q30 Television, QU Tonight, The Quinnipiac Chronicle and Barnacle. I’d encourage students to join these organizations and get a feel for the creation and distribution process. I’m biased, but I think our students are among some of the best in the communications sphere. They take their projects very seriously. Being involved at Quinnipiac was a great primer for me beginning in the entertainment industry and allowed me to forge connections that I still have today.”

A course in global perspective

Exploring Communications Abroad (COM 340) introduces students to the worldwide development of communications, including communication practices, infrastructure, environments and specializations. Students conduct primary and secondary research on communications in a specific country or in a cross-cultural context. The topics can range from international cinema though storytelling and global branding to documentary filmmaking depending on the specialty of the instructor. Each section includes a short-term study-abroad component directly related to the topic. Recent sections include The London Brand and Visualizing Greece.

Learning The London Brand

The London Brand offers students a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in London's brand, encompassing its rich history, architecture, theater scene, film industry, music, art and the iconic presence of the queen. By exploring these diverse perspectives, students gain a comprehensive understanding of how these elements intertwine to shape a city's brand, and how they contribute to the creation of a compelling and coherent vision for London. Highlights of the trip include stops at Westminster Abbey, The British Museum of Art, The Tower of London and the London Eye, as well as a guided tour of Windsor Castle and the Warner Bros. Studio Harry Potter tour.

A Creative Journey Through Iconic Greek Landscapes

Visualizing Greece provides a practical introduction to and exploration of visual communication in the context of specific iconic areas of Greece, such as Ancient Athens and the Greek Islands. Throughout the course, students will sketch, design, conceptualize, reflect upon and discuss their ideas on the creative process, all with Greece as their laboratory. Basic perceptual theories are introduced to help students grasp the use of visual elements like color, form, depth and movement in Greece's cultural celebrations. Ultimately, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the impact of historical and contemporary visual imagery in Greece, exploring how it influences our perceptions and how visual culture can be harnessed for advertising and public relations.

QU in LA

The Quinnipiac University in Los Angeles program gives you the opportunity to live, work and learn in the heart of America’s entertainment industry. Los Angeles is home to the “Big 5” film studios, 10 professional sports franchises, major broadcast news network bureaus — including ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC — and a media market that reaches more than 5 million people daily.

Maggie Smith ’20, MS ’21, said she had an incredible experience exploring and living in Southern California with the Quinnipiac University in Los Angeles program. She practiced what she learned in the classroom at SiriusXM, while taking advantage of the many opportunities the region has to offer. She documented her adventures along the way, which included hiking to the Hollywood sign, cheering on the Los Angeles Dodgers and spending a day at Catalina Island.

Well-prepared to cover the world

As part of an advanced international journalism course, Sarah Doiron ’17 traveled across Nicaragua to meet with locals and tell their stories using a variety of multimedia resources.

“It was one of the most interesting experiences I ever had,” she said.

One of the most eye-opening experiences occurred when she visited a nursing home and witnessed how differently the elderly are treated there.

“There was a blind man there talking with us about how he didn’t get much help,” she recalled. “He told us about how other people make fun of him and guide him into walls.”

The trip changed her world-view and helped her use the many skills she developed during the three investigative journalism internships she completed at Quinnipiac. Coupled with her time as editor of our student-run newspaper, The Quinnipiac Chronicle, she has built an eclectic toolbox of skills and talents.

“I have so many skills I’ve developed over my years at Quinnipiac,” she said. “I have loved everything about my experience here. The Chronicle has given me plenty of learning opportunities to grow as a journalist, and being editor-in-chief has helped me grow as a person.”
