The creative writing certificate gives English majors, minors and students from all disciplines the opportunity to expand their creative and professional writing abilities. Through a sequence of workshops and courses, you’ll generate, revise and refine original work while developing the ability to “read like a writer”, connecting analytical reading with effective composition.

This certificate provides a strong foundation for careers in publishing, content creation, communications and editing, while also enriching your ability to express ideas across academic and professional contexts. Whether you aspire to write for publication or simply strengthen your creative voice, this program enhances your confidence and versatility as a writer.

What You’ll Do & Gain

Develop original work in your chosen genre(s) — fiction, poetry or creative nonfiction.
Exchange feedback and revisions through a workshop model, polishing work to higher standards.

Creative Writing Certificate Curriculum

The Certificate in Creative Writing will give you the opportunity to gain experience in writing original works of fiction, poetry, and/or creative nonfiction through generating, workshopping, revising, and editing your writing, while learning to link critical reading skills with compositional skills—i.e., to “read like a writer.” Through this program, you will acquire the core skills necessary to pursue a career as a publishing writer, as well as apply for jobs currently in high demand in content writing and editing. This program aims to inspire not only English majors and minors but also students from other departments to enhance their creative writing abilities and consider pathways to publication and professional opportunities.
