Sociology: Learn Big Ideas, Build Real Skills

As a sociology major, you’ll study diverse groups, along with a vast range of social dynamics, issues and trends. You’ll learn how people are affected by social factors, such as healthcare, education, religion and inequality. Award-winning faculty mentors help you choose courses that allow you to tailor your studies to your specific interests. In addition, you have the option to focus your major with a concentration in social work and community services — with specialized training for a career in social work. The sociology major is housed in the same department as an anthropology minor, allowing students to connect with both fields and benefit from interdisciplinary perspectives.

Your education begins in the classroom, but expands far beyond it. In your junior year, you’ll apply your skills and gain valuable, real-world experience through internships in settings such as schools, police departments, after-school programs, addiction treatment centers, behavioral health programs or social service agencies. Your classes and your experiential opportunities will give you the knowledge and skills to pursue any career, such as lawyer, social worker, teacher, social worker, youth counselor, police officer, community development specialist or epidemiologist, and many more.
