A Course in Global Perspective
A recent section of Special Topics in Psychology (PS 300), Maternal Child Health and Wellness: Cross-Cultural Perspectives, explored key topics related to maternal-child wellness both locally and globally with an international focus on Guatemala. The course examined a range of topics such as pregnancy, birthing, parenting, schooling, adverse childhood experiences, toxic stress and mental health both in the U.S. and internationally, as well as provided students with an introductory understanding of Guatemalan history and Maya culture.
Students met on campus regularly throughout the semester and then traveled for approximately 10 days to San Lucas Tolimán, Guatemala.
This experiential learning course was designed to not only engage students in thinking deeply and critically about many important issues pertaining to maternal-child wellness from a range of levels of analysis (e.g., individual, family, neighborhood/community, systems, cultural), but also to observe and actively consider the similarities and differences present in these issues both within and across cultures.
