With an abundance of resources, internship opportunities and career-focused guidance, you'll be equipped with the skills and knowledge that distinguish you to employers and pave the way for long-term success.

Build your skills through hands-on experience

At Quinnipiac, psychology majors have the opportunity to concentrate in one of three areas: applied clinical science, applied cognition, or applied work and organizational psychology. With each of these concentrations, students gain hands-on experience through fieldwork and/or skill-building activities.

The applied clinical science concentration prepares students for careers related to clinical psychology and provides the basis for graduate work in fields such as social work, counseling and school psychology.

Related fieldwork coures include:

  • PS 391: Applied Clinical Science Seminar
    • Professional, theoretical, clinical and ethical issues related to each student's fieldwork experience represent the content of the course.
  • PS 393/394: Fieldwork in Applied Clinical Science
    • Students are placed in a community service agency to gain supervised experience in applied clinical programs. Placements total a minimum of 120 hours during the semester, may include youth counseling agencies, rehabilitation services, mental health clinics, research sites, centers for people with mental retardation, psychiatric hospitals, schools for special populations and others.

The applied cognition concentration focuses on providing students with the opportunity to gain job-relevant skills while exploring cognition. Students are exposed to major theories and methods in cognitive psychology, along with applications of cognitive psychology to the workplace (e.g., design thinking, task analysis, survey design) and careers that use insights and methods from cognitive psychology (e.g., behavioral engineering). Because cognitive psychology draws on a range of disciplines, students will also have the opportunity to explore cognition from a different field.

Upon consultation with a faculty member in the cognitive perspective, students are able to gain knowledge through:

  • Internships
  • Independent research
  • Relevant training (e.g. certification of technical skill)

The Applied Work and Organizational Psychology Concentration exposes students to career possibilities in industrial-organizational (I-O) psychology areas and provides the basis for further study related to fields such as I-O psychology and management.

Related fieldwork courses include:

  • PS 397: Fieldwork in Industrial/Organizational Psychology - Students are placed in a corporation or consulting firm under the supervision of an industrial-organizational psychologist or HR manager. A minimum of 120 hours of work is required.

Community Mental Health Awareness

Our Certificate in Mental Health Awareness enables you to develop a deeper understanding of mental health issues and distinguish between psychological responses that are within the realm of normality and those that may be more concerning.

Through both coursework and experiential learning opportunities, you’ll be prepared for various careers in high demand. Students are required to complete a training either for credit or non-credit and participate in a community-level experience involving mental health awareness. At the end of the certificate students will complete a project reflecting on their experience and demonstrating that they have completed all the learning objectives.

A Course in Global Perspective

A recent section of Special Topics in Psychology (PS 300), Maternal Child Health and Wellness: Cross-Cultural Perspectives, explored key topics related to maternal-child wellness both locally and globally with an international focus on Guatemala. The course examined a range of topics such as pregnancy, birthing, parenting, schooling, adverse childhood experiences, toxic stress and mental health both in the U.S. and internationally, as well as provided students with an introductory understanding of Guatemalan history and Maya culture.

Students met on campus regularly throughout the semester and then traveled for approximately 10 days to San Lucas Tolimán, Guatemala.

This experiential learning course was designed to not only engage students in thinking deeply and critically about many important issues pertaining to maternal-child wellness from a range of levels of analysis (e.g., individual, family, neighborhood/community, systems, cultural), but also to observe and actively consider the similarities and differences present in these issues both within and across cultures.
