Michael W Schmidt

Assistant Professor of Journalism

Mike Schmidt is an assistant professor of journalism in the School of Communications. He teaches courses in visual journalism, social media and design.

Before coming to Quinnipiac in 2025, Prof. Schmidt spent eight years in the newsroom at The New York Times, leading strategy and content creation for visual and digital media initiatives. He managed creative storytelling on the newsroom's social media accounts and led the team that pioneered the Times' short-form vertical video format featuring reporters on camera. His work there brought together storytellers, designers, animators, video producers, reporters, editors, illustrators and photographers. He was the senior producer on a Times documentary about the search for Bob Ross's original paintings, which earned an Emmy Award for Outstanding New Approaches: Arts, Lifestyle and Culture.

His prior roles include leadership positions at CNN's Courageous Studio, Mashable and National Geographic Magazine, where he was responsible for the vision, creative strategy and management of video teams. He also served as a designer for The Daily, the iPad-only news publication.

Schmidt holds a master's degree in art and design, with a focus on new media and animation, from North Carolina State University, and a bachelor's degree in psychology, with a minor in film, from Arizona State University.
