As colleges and universities across the country celebrate First-Generation Day, Quinnipiac University is thrilled to join the movement! Join us on November 8th for our inaugural First-Generation College Student Celebration Day, an event dedicated to recognizing and celebrating our first-gen students, faculty, and staff. On this special day, first-gen college students will have the chance to write thank-you notes to those who have supported them on their journeys—from mentors to family members. Every story of resilience deserves to be honored, and we’re proud to recognize the community that has made these achievements possible. Join us in celebrating these remarkable individuals as they reflect on their paths to success, sharing notes of gratitude and strength. This is a joyous occasion to celebrate resilience, community, and the power of support, sponsored by the Office of Inclusive Excellence. On November 7, 2024, from 11-1 PM we will provide sweet treats and thank you cards at the North Haven Campus tabling. On November 8, 2024, from 11- 2 PM join us for hot chocolate and sweet treats outside of the Student Center or popcorn in the library at the Mount Carmel Campus. Please have mailing addresses if you would like us to mail the thank you notes for you. 😊 Background on First Gen Day In celebration of First-Generation Student National Celebration and in honor of the National Higher Education Act of 1965, the term "first-generation" highlights students who are the first in their family to pursue higher education. This designation has been important since the act’s passage, which aimed to provide more equitable access to higher education, particularly for students from low-income and underrepresented backgrounds. The focus on first-gen students has become more prominent due to their increasing numbers and the challenges they often face, such as navigating unfamiliar academic environments and financial barriers. Ten percent of QU campus identifies as a first-generation college student.
