Already Halfway Through the Semester!
October 18, 2024
October 18, 2024
By Tom Ellett
Chief Experience Officer
Dear parents and family member of the Quinnipiac student body,
Our students have been enjoying the beautiful fall weather here in Hamden, the leaves are starting to change colors, and just like that, we hit the half-way mark of the semester already.
When I have the opportunity to speak with students, some will say that there is so much to do on campus, and then others will say that they wish there was more to do. In our attempt to try and share all that happens on campus, please remind your students of the TV screens in all classrooms, student center, and in most residence halls, that share ALL the happenings for athletic events, student activities, and even some partner off campus events. Additionally, the “What’s happening this weekend” flyer gets posted in all Mount Carmel residence halls.
The university is alive and well on weekends. Some upcoming events to share with your students:
The annual Boomer’s Boo Bash is scheduled for this Saturday October 19, this event is hosted by our student athletes and local families are invited to our Quad for treats (no tricks!), games, giveaways, and more!
Next up is Bobcat Weekend (October 25-27), events for students, families, and alumni will be happening all weekend.
One of the groups I have the pleasure of advising is the 1929 Scholarship Committee, comprised of undergraduate students committed to raising scholarships for peers in their first year of Quinnipiac. They have awarded 10 scholarships to help offset the cost of attendance. The group offered a Professors versus Student Dodgeball Game and the weekend AFTER Bobcat Weekend, Saturday and Sunday, November 2-3, they will do their second annual “Breakfast in Bed” program. Students can order from two options and have it delivered to their room. Parents and families, this may be a great present to surprise your student. The food has been donated and all the money raised will go to the scholarship fund. If interested in ordering for your student, please register for the "Breakfast in Bed" program using the online form, or if you attend Bobcat Weekend, please visit their table! Additionally, for an additional $5 donation from an underclass student will count them as a 2024-25 donor and receive a 1929 pin, Seniors who donate $19.29 to the fund will receive a 1929 graduation cord for the ceremony in May. Thank you in advance for considering donating in your student’s honor.
We will be hosting our third Talks on the Rocks dinner of the semester on November 11, the topic will be about spirituality and religion on campus. Please encourage your Bobcat to register, dinner is always delicious! The RSVP link get sent out two weeks before the event. It is a full-buffet dinner, no charge if the student RVSPs, is chosen and attends. A $25 fee for those who RSVP and don’t show-up.
An off-campus opportunity for engagement occurs with our friends at the Shubert Theater in New Haven, where they are offering our students discounted group tickets (25% off) to any show, they can take our shuttle to New Haven and enjoy some of the local culture and check out the beautiful historical architecture the theater has to offer.
A group of parents have requested we look to find a company to offer transportation home during breaks. I am happy to announce that a company, College Break Bus, is allowed to offer their service to Quinnipiac students, picking up our students at North Lot on dates and times they will schedule for break trips home. This is designed to bring students within a close vicinity during key breaks throughout the academic year, including Thanksgiving, Winter and Spring Breaks. They will be picked up on campus and dropped off in some areas like New Jersey, Westchester County, Long Island and Boston. This service exclusively caters to college students only, offers free WiFi and live GPS tracking. See the advertisement in this newsletter. Note, this is NOT a Quinnipiac service, rather an operation that is being shared with you to utilize if you are so inclined. (Please see Shuttle section below for more information about shuttle service over breaks).
There are so many events around campus each week, I hope your student is actively engaging with their peers, as those who are connected are more likely to do better academically. If your student has not found their community yet and needs assistance, we are here to help.
We completed this semester’s series of the Parent Academy webinars. Thank you for those who attended the very informative sessions. We believe offering parents and families further informational sessions can help in your engagement with your student and their time here at Quinnipiac.
You might want to know what’s on deck for your student on campus, here are some of the things we are looking forward to offering this semester:
Men’s and women’s basketball starting later this month, and don’t forget about ice hockey, volleyball, soccer, rugby, lacrosse, track, tennis and all of the rec teams including e-sports. On the Rocks Pub and Grill is open for dinner and interactive programs twice a week (Wednesday and Thursday evenings).
Undergraduate registration for the spring semester starts on October 28. Have your Bobcat check their MyQ for updates.
Lastly, Election Day is around the corner, remind your student to vote, please: Quinnipiac University – Get Registered to Vote (civicnation.org).
Finally, thank you to the parents who have volunteered to join the parent advisory board. We held our first meeting, and I can’t thank them enough for their insights and feedback on how to continue to improve the Bobcat experience.
As always, should you ever have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me or any of the XO staff at Quinnipiac.

Living on campus can be one of the most important experiences your student will have during their time in college. Making the choice to live on campus positively contributes to a student's success. We are pleased to offer senior housing for the 2025-2026 academic year in Eastview and university-owned off campus houses.
Housing contracts will be available after October 22 and are due by November 3 for participation in the senior housing selection process. Senior housing selection will take place on November 7. (Please note: Housing selection for rising sophomores and juniors will take place during the spring semester, in March and April.)
Please note that senior housing contracts are for both the fall 2025 and spring 2026 semesters. Please note that senior housing is not required and not guaranteed. Students are required to pay a $500 non-refundable housing reservation fee at the time of their contract. Rising seniors have 30 days to cancel the contract if their plans change. Students seeking a medical accommodation for housing must contact the Office of Student Accessibility before November 1. Please see our Housing Selection website for more information.
We look forward to having your student on campus next year!
Our athletic teams are getting underway. Get the fall athletic schedules on GoBobcats.com
The Quinnipiac men's ice hockey program will face rival Cornell in a non-conference game during the 2024 Frozen Apple at Madison Square Garden on November 30.
Quinnipiac is coming off a 27-10-2 campaign in 2023-24, registering a 17-4-1 mark in conference play to record its fourth consecutive Cleary Cup. The Bobcats became the second ECAC Hockey program on record to win at least a share of the Cleary Cup in four straight campaigns, joining Harvard (1985-89), who won the regular-season title outright three times (1986, 1987, 1989) and splitting the honor with St. Lawrence in 1988.
"We are very excited to head back to Madison Square Garden and participate in this year's Frozen Apple," said Quinnipiac head coach Rand Pecknold. "It was a very memorable contest in 2016 and we can't wait to get back to MSG for another great chapter in our rivalry with Cornell."

Welcome, new students! And welcome back to our returning students!
The Financial Aid Office is here to provide information, support and guidance to students and families as they navigate through the various resources necessary to fund their education. First, we encourage all students to complete a FAFSA at studentaid.gov if they have not already done so. This is the first step in determining what types of federal, state and institutional financial aid a student may be eligible for. And please remember, the FAFSA needs to be completed each year! From there, the financial aid staff will put together an award package of all the financial aid a student is qualified for.
After an award package has been generated, please keep an eye on your Financial Aid Checklist to ensure all outstanding requirements have been met.
Ensure your Financial Aid Checklist is Complete! Your financial aid checklist must be complete for your aid to reflect accurately against your invoice. This includes sections such as:
Complete the required documents*
Review and accept your financial aid award package
Complete Entrance Counseling
Sign a Direct Loan Master Promissory Note
*When you submit the FAFSA, you may be randomly selected for a process called “verification.” Our office must determine the accuracy of the information provided on your FAFSA application by requesting and reviewing additional documentation.
For those students and families that are looking for additional resources to help fund their education please see the following recommendations that a student can explore:
Outside Scholarships: Many students use outside scholarships as a resource to help with funding their education. We encourage all students to research outside scholarship opportunities. Learn more about searching for scholarships.
Federal Parent PLUS Loan: The federal government offers each parent the opportunity to apply for a Parent PLUS loan. This is an educational loan in which the parent is the borrower, and the parent is responsible for repaying the loan. The borrower can begin repaying the loan once the funds are fully disbursed to Quinnipiac for the loan term or defer payments while their student is attending school on at least a half-time basis. The interest rate on the Parent PLUS loan is fixed at 9.08% for the 2024-2025 academic year. The loan application is located at studentaid.gov. The borrowing parent will sign in to the website using their FSA (Federal Student Aid) ID, which is the same login used to complete the parent portion of the FAFSA. There is an option to create an ID on the website if you do not already have one. The government charges an origination fee for borrowing this loan. The fee is 4.3% of the borrowed amount of the loan. Remember to add this fee into the amount you decide to borrow.
If a parent is denied credit for the PLUS loan, a first year or sophomore student will be offered an additional $4000 unsubsidized federal student loan ($5000 for juniors and seniors) as part of their financial aid offer for the school year. Parent PLUS will notify the school of the parent's credit decision in 24 to 48 hours. This additional student loan is allowable only if the PLUS loan decision is not overturned on appeal or endorsed for payment. Note: if one parent is denied credit but the other parent is approved to borrow the PLUS loan, the additional student loan is not allowable. Parent PLUS can be reached at 1-800-433-3243 with any questions regarding the application process.
Private Educational Loans: Private loans are available to students, parents or guardians. Please refer to elmselect.com, an unbiased website providing the most current information on private lenders historically used by Quinnipiac students. There you will find the link to each lender, their loan applications and information pertinent to their loan products. There is no one lender more favorable than the other. Please contact the lender(s) you are considering for specific questions relating to your financial situation. While the website provides a comprehensive list of lenders, you can choose to work with a lender not reflected on Elm Select. No matter which lender you choose, they will notify the Financial Aid Office once the loan is secured.
Please note: Undergraduate students must have a credit worthy co-signer to secure a private loan.
For any questions or to speak with a financial aid counselor, please call 203-582-8750 or visit the Financial Aid Office in the Echlin Center. Counselors are available Monday – Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

All members of our community that bring a vehicle to campus are required to review and be familiar with the Quinnipiac Parking Rules and Regulations.
Members of the community who do not follow the Quinnipiac Parking Rules and Regulations are subject to ticket and tow.
The MyParking application for permit registration is now open.
No permits will be issued to students who have three or more unpaid tickets on their account. Please take this opportunity to visit MyParking to review any tickets and pay fines.
Residential first-year students are not authorized to have or operate vehicles on campus at any time.
Per the Quinnipiac University Rules and Regulations each permit allows parking in certain designated lots. Please find the list of available lots under Parking Permit Classifications and Locations on our website.
Campus maps will help to identify the lots for which the permit entitles the driver to park.
Any questions, please reach out to One Stop Auxiliary Services at parking@qu.edu. Learn more on the parking page of our website.
Several parents have requested that we allow a third-party provider to assist with shuttle services for students over breaks, this would benefit students living in areas where a high number of Quinnipiac students reside. This new option is not affiliated with Quinnipiac, but does the same services at a dozen other universities across the northeast.
College Break Bus is coming to Quinnipiac University just in time for Thanksgiving, Winter, and Spring Breaks. Students will now have a stress-free way to travel to and from campus. No need to take time off work or face the hassle of traffic.
Although College Break Bus operates independently from Quinnipiac, it will provide pick-up and drop-off service directly in the North Lot at the RecWell Center on campus.
Initially, three routes will be available:
Green Route: White Plains, NY; Nanuet, NY; Clifton, NJ; Iselin, NJ; Hamilton, NJ
Pink Route: Stamford, CT; Roslyn Heights, NY; Melville, NY
Orange Route: Hartford, CT; Worcester area (Millbury), MA; Boston, MA
The College Break Bus is a students-only service, offering amenities such as free Wi-Fi, charging outlets, live bus tracking, onboard restrooms and professional friendly drivers.
Please note, as this is not a university-affiliated service, all inquiries should be directed to College Break Bus.
This service is in addition to the university shuttle to Union Station in New Haven. Learn more about transportation options during university breaks
Our shuttles are here to provide constant, reliable transportation to our students. As with any commute, students should allow themselves ample time to travel to their destination. Students are encouraged to download the Passio GO! app for live mapping of the shuttles.
If your student is experiencing any concerns or issues with the shuttles, please email us at qushuttles@qu.edu.

Public Safety is located in the heart of the Mount Carmel Campus on Bobcat Way in a stand-alone building. Our department is always open to assist our students, faculty, staff and parents.
Public Safety is responsible for the protection of lives and property at Quinnipiac. We strive to achieve this goal through proactive patrol (vehicle, foot, bike and video surveillance), investigations of incidents, victim assistance and educational programs. We provide campus coverage 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
Our mission is to provide the highest level of service, safety and security to the Quinnipiac community through an unwavering commitment to our core values, which are R.E.S.P.E.C.T.:
Responsibility
Excellence
Service
Professionalism
Education
Compassion
Trust
As part of our ongoing commitment to safety, I want to remind all students, faculty and staff of the definition and importance of the "Shelter in Place" directive, which you may receive in the event of an emergency or drill.
"Shelter in Place" is a protective action taken to remain indoors to avoid external hazards, such as severe weather (like a tornado) or a hazardous-material release. If sheltering in place is necessary, university officials will notify you through our emergency notification system with specific instructions, including:
Get Inside, Stay Inside
Get inside. Bring your loved ones, your emergency supplies, and when possible, your pets
Find a safe spot in this location. The exact spot will depend on the type of emergency
Stay put in this location until officials say that it is safe to leave
Staying Put in Your Vehicle
In some emergencies it is safer to pull over and stay in your car than to keep driving. If you as are very close to home, your workplace, or a public building, go there immediately and go inside.
Follow the “shelter-in-place” recommendations for that location. If you can’t get indoors quickly and safely:
It may be safer to pull your car over and stay put than to keep driving. Listen to local officials to know what to do.
Pull over to the side of the road.
Stop your vehicle in the safest place possible and turn off the engine.
Stay where you are until officials say it is safe to get back on the road.
Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with this term and be prepared to respond should the need arise. Additionally, the university will be conducting a shelter-in-place drill later this month, and further details will be shared closer to the date.
Your safety is our priority, and we appreciate your attention to this important matter.
