Parents and Families Update: August 2024
Kicking Off the 2024-25 Year!
August 15, 2024
August 15, 2024
By Tom Ellett
Chief Experience Officer
Dear parents and family members of the Quinnipiac student body,
Welcome to Quinnipiac! Whether your student is joining us for the first time or returning for another year, we are thrilled to have them as part of our community. For some, this will be their final year, and we are excited to support them as they reach this milestone.
The university continues to undergo significant physical upgrades including a new residence hall, The Grove, which is opening this semester for 417 incoming and returning students. Additionally, two new academic buildings, the School of Business and the SITE are in the process of completion and will be open next year, officially opening in late May 2025.
As I mentioned to incoming parents, we are here to assist your student and encourage them to get involved in clubs and organizations, attend athletic events and provide service to our community in Hamden and North Haven. Students who engage in these activities often find a sense of belonging and success in college. This year’s engagement fair is scheduled for August 28 from 4 to 6 p.m. on the Quad. Please encourage your student to attend. Another notable event is our men’s ice hockey team will be lacing up their skates on Saturday November 30 to face Cornell at Madison Square Garden in New York City! This will be a can’t miss game. If you are unable to attend, you can watch it on ESPN+.
We offer numerous student employment opportunities on campus, including positions with the university or our food partner, Chartwell’s, which employed more than150 students last year. Additionally, our healthcare partner, Hartford HealthCare, provides part-time positions at their hospitals, clinics and other operations. Our career services office is here to assist in this process.
We continue to embrace the “co-creation” model at our institution. Shake Smart in the RecWell center, is operated by students for students, and has been a wonderful addition to our dining plan and well received by our students. We are in our second year of our Quinnipiac “menu makers” position. These students select daily dinner menu options at Café Q and track popularity of entrée options, ensuring the variety and satisfaction increase over time. If your student has any questions or suggestions, please have them email menumakers@qu.edu.
We will continue to offer our Parent Academy sessions this fall. These Zoom sessions focus on specific areas of the student experience. The first one is scheduled for the second week of September, check your email later this month for the invitation.
I would also like to remind our students that this year is an election year (November 5), please encourage them to vote. They can register using Quinnipiac’s voter registration portal.
Last and certainly not least, communication is key to building a trusting relationship with parents and family members. If you have any questions or feedback, please feel free to email us at QUParents@qu.edu. Your feedback is important to us. Thank you for being such great partners in supporting your students’ success at Quinnipiac .
We look forward to welcoming you and your student to campus soon.

They also raised $165,000 and more for philanthropic causes locally and across the country during the last academic year.
We have a new fraternity joining the Quinnipiac fraternity and sorority life community this semester, Sigma Phi Epsilon. To celebrate their re-establishment, they are offering $3,000 in scholarships to any students who qualify/apply. You can learn more by following them on Instagram at @qu.sigep. Apply to join
All students are encouraged to attend Meet the Greeks, hosted on the Echlin/Tator Lawn on August 25 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. This event offers opportunities to meet the fraternities and sororities at Quinnipiac, enjoy free ice cream and connect with fraternity and sorority life leaders and staff members. If your Bobcat wants to find their home away from home, establish a community of peers with similar values, participate in service/philanthropy events, and have fun, feel free to direct them our way for information about joining. There’s so much coming up in the fraternity and sorority community; if your Bobcat is interested in joining us, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Did you know that 1 in 3 first-year students have a concern addressed by the CARE Team? If your Bobcat has any concerns that arise during their time at Quinnipiac, know that the CARE Team is here to support your student.
Common concerns addressed by the CARE Team:
Excessive stress/ anxiety
Interpersonal conflict
Academic concerns
Death of a loved one/ family member
Transitional issues: homesickness/ trouble making friends
To learn about the CARE Team, types of concerns addressed and supported by CARE and resources of support for students, please visit qu.edu/care.
Each first-year student moving into a residence hall must register for a time slot during their respective day. The success of our move-in process is dependent on everyone signing up for a specific time slot. All residential students received an email during the beginning of this month with a link. If you have not yet signed up for a time slot, please do so today. If you have any issues, email residentiallife@qu.edu.
Students moving into a residence hall on the Mount Carmel Campus should enter New Road from Ives Street, unless they are moving into The Grove, in which case they should enter via Mount Carmel Avenue. Check out the route you will take to your specific residence hall. Note: You may pass your residence hall while in line to unload. Please stay in your vehicle until directed otherwise.
Each first-year student moving into a residence hall next week is permitted one vehicle to be pulled up to a residence hall and receive the assistance of our talented and passionate move-in crew. Any additional vehicles will be directed toward a parking lot, from where you may carry additional items to your room. We recommend any students wishing to bring a second vehicle to do it in the weeks after move-in.
Please label everything with your room number and name to ensure it reaches the right destination.
While unloading in front of your respective residence hall, one person must wait in your vehicle at all times. After all contents are out of your vehicle, the driver will be directed to the closest available parking lot.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation with our move-in plan.

The Quinnipiac men's ice hockey program will face rival Cornell in a non-conference game during the 2024 Frozen Apple at Madison Square Garden on November 30.
Quinnipiac is coming off a 27-10-2 campaign in 2023-24, registering a 17-4-1 mark in conference play to record its fourth consecutive Cleary Cup. The Bobcats became the second ECAC Hockey program on record to win at least a share of the Cleary Cup in four straight campaigns, joining Harvard (1985-89), who won the regular-season title outright three times (1986, 1987, 1989) and splitting the honor with St. Lawrence in 1988.
"We are very excited to head back to Madison Square Garden and participate in this year's Frozen Apple," said Quinnipiac head coach Rand Pecknold. "It was a very memorable contest in 2016 and we can't wait to get back to MSG for another great chapter in our rivalry with Cornell."

What is a faculty-led course abroad? A Quinnipiac course taught during the spring or summer session that has a travel component with it. Students will travel with their professor and classmates as part of the course for 10 –14 days. Travel either takes place during the spring break or summer depending on the course. In the past, faculty-led courses abroad have traveled to destinations such as Costa Rica, Guatemala, Italy, Japan, Morocco, Poland, Tanzania and Vietnam. Destinations may vary year to year. Faculty-led courses abroad are offered in multiple disciplines and in every school/college.

What is a semester and J-term (non-faculty-led program)? Students can study for a full semester ranging from 4 to 6 months at an international institution. Depending on the student’s major, they can participate as early as the spring semester of their first year through their senior year. Short-term programs are offered during the winter or summer breaks. These programs are offered through partner institutions separate from the faculty-led opportunities mentioned above.
Welcome, new students! And welcome back to our returning students!
The Financial Aid Office is here to provide information, support and guidance to students and families as they navigate through the various resources necessary to fund their education. First, we encourage all students to complete a FAFSA at studentaid.gov if they have not already done so. This is the first step in determining what types of federal, state and institutional financial aid a student may be eligible for. And please remember, the FAFSA needs to be completed each year! From there, the financial aid staff will put together an award package of all the financial aid a student is qualified for.
After an award package has been generated, please keep an eye on your Financial Aid Checklist to ensure all outstanding requirements have been met.
Ensure your Financial Aid Checklist is Complete! Your financial aid checklist must be complete for your aid to reflect accurately against your invoice. This includes sections such as:
Complete the required documents*
Review and accept your financial aid award package
Complete Entrance Counseling
Sign a Direct Loan Master Promissory Note
*When you submit the FAFSA, you may be randomly selected for a process called “verification.” Our office must determine the accuracy of the information provided on your FAFSA application by requesting and reviewing additional documentation.
For those students and families that are looking for additional resources to help fund their education please see the following recommendations that a student can explore:
Outside Scholarships: Many students use outside scholarships as a resource to help with funding their education. We encourage all students to research outside scholarship opportunities. Learn more about searching for scholarships.
Federal Parent PLUS Loan: The federal government offers each parent the opportunity to apply for a Parent PLUS loan. This is an educational loan in which the parent is the borrower, and the parent is responsible for repaying the loan. The borrower can begin repaying the loan once the funds are fully disbursed to Quinnipiac for the loan term or defer payments while their student is attending school on at least a half-time basis. The interest rate on the Parent PLUS loan is fixed at 9.08% for the 2024-2025 academic year. The loan application is located at studentaid.gov. The borrowing parent will sign in to the website using their FSA (Federal Student Aid) ID, which is the same login used to complete the parent portion of the FAFSA. There is an option to create an ID on the website if you do not already have one. The government charges an origination fee for borrowing this loan. The fee is 4.3% of the borrowed amount of the loan. Remember to add this fee into the amount you decide to borrow.
If a parent is denied credit for the PLUS loan, a first year or sophomore student will be offered an additional $4000 unsubsidized federal student loan ($5000 for juniors and seniors) as part of their financial aid offer for the school year. Parent PLUS will notify the school of the parent's credit decision in 24 to 48 hours. This additional student loan is allowable only if the PLUS loan decision is not overturned on appeal or endorsed for payment. Note: if one parent is denied credit but the other parent is approved to borrow the PLUS loan, the additional student loan is not allowable. Parent PLUS can be reached at 1-800-433-3243 with any questions regarding the application process.
Private Educational Loans: Private loans are available to students, parents or guardians. Please refer to elmselect.com, an unbiased website providing the most current information on private lenders historically used by Quinnipiac students. There you will find the link to each lender, their loan applications and information pertinent to their loan products. There is no one lender more favorable than the other. Please contact the lender(s) you are considering for specific questions relating to your financial situation. While the website provides a comprehensive list of lenders, you can choose to work with a lender not reflected on Elm Select. No matter which lender you choose, they will notify the Financial Aid Office once the loan is secured.
Please note: Undergraduate students must have a credit worthy co-signer to secure a private loan.
For any questions or to speak with a financial aid counselor, please call 203-582-8750 or visit the Financial Aid Office in the Echlin Center. Counselors are available Monday – Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

The One Stop office is eagerly anticipating the return of our students this fall. We have several important reminders for all students and their proxies.
Paying for College: Set Up Your Financing Plan ASAP
All students registered for the fall term should see their charges in Self-Service. If you have not already, please ensure that your balance is covered. The Resolve a Balance Due page of our website can assist with this task.
Please ensure that all past due balances are covered prior to move-in. This will allow for a smooth transition on move-in day.
Questions about your bill? Contact One Stop
Undergraduate students who have less than 12 credits should contact the One Stop office to discuss their status as a full-time or part-time student.
We encourage all students to check their accounts in Self-Service once a month.
If any students are due refunds, these will be processed after the add/drop registration period.
Students may authorize a proxy (parent, guardian, spouse or other individual) to have access to Self-Service to make payments on behalf of the student or to view grades. In addition, authorizing a proxy also allows the appropriate Quinnipiac faculty and staff to discuss relevant matters with the proxy. Learn more about Proxy Access.
August 12 – August 23 Monday to Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
August 24 – August 25 (Welcome Weekend Sat & Sun) 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
August 26 – September 6 – Mon – Thurs 8 a.m. – 6 p.m., Frid 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
We receive a large volume of correspondence and it may take us one to two days to respond to your request. Email onestop@qu.edu remains the most efficient way to reach our office. We kindly ask you not to send multiple messages or leave multiple voicemails within a couple of days. Our correspondence gets distributed among the team and multiple correspondence often ends in multiple members of our team doing the same research and responding multiple times and thus makes our queues longer. In the unlikely event that your original correspondence is not replied to within three business days, we apologize and encourage you to please contact us again.
Self-Service Student Finance Guide provides complete instructions on using Self-Service to set up a proxy, view and pay invoices and set up a payment plan.
Managing Student Finances pages show cost of attendance and financial aid options.
The One Stop webpage provides answers to many questions and the frequently asked questions page is a particularly helpful resource.

Welcome all new and returning families, this is a reminder to have your student waive or enroll in the student health insurance before August 31, 2024.
If your student has health insurance and has not already done so, please have them log onto the Gallagher website to waive the insurance.
Go to www.gallagherstudent.com/quinnipiac and log in with your Quinnipiac email and password. Once in, you can scroll down to find a yellow “Waive” button. Click that button and enter the required information. Then hit submit. You will immediately receive a confirmation notice and your health insurance fee will be removed from your tuition invoice in 2-4 business days.
If you have already waived, then you should have received a confirmation notice that it went through and you should see that the Insurance fee was removed from your tuition invoice. If you are unsure, please email QUSHIP@qu.edu to request confirmation.
Please note that students are required to waive or enroll in the student health insurance program (SHIP) yearly, so set a yearly reminder in your calendar to log in each June.
Any questions please email QUSHIP@qu.edu or call Lucille Marottolo at 203-582-8934.
As we get ready to host you back to campus this coming Fall semester, we want to ensure your transition to campus life is as seamless as possible.
All members of our community that bring a vehicle to campus are required to review and be familiar with the Quinnipiac Parking Rules and Regulations.
The MyParking application for permit registration is now open.
No permits will be issued to students who have three or more unpaid tickets on their account. Please take this opportunity to visit MyParking to review any tickets and pay fines.
Residential first-year students are not authorized to have or operate vehicles on campus at any time.
Per the Quinnipiac University Rules and Regulations each permit allows parking in certain designated lots. Please find the list of available lots under Parking Permit Classifications and Locations on our website.
Campus maps will help to identify the lots for which the permit entitles the driver to park.
Decals are printed on a rolling basis.
Undergraduate residential and commuter students will pick up their permits from One Stop Office. See hours of operation for One Stop. We will have coverage over Welcome Weekend.
When decals are printed and ready for pick up, emails will be sent to the student’s Quinnipiac email account with instructions for pick-up.
A valid Quinnipiac ID must be presented by the student to pick up the decal.
Graduate students will have their decal mailed to their MyParking address.
Any questions, please reach out to One Stop Auxiliary Services at parking@qu.edu. Learn more on the parking page of our website.
Shuttle schedules will be available on the shuttles page
As of August 2024, the Title IX Office will be known as the Title IX and Bias Response Office.

Effective August 1, 2024, the 2024 Title IX Regulations issued by the Department of Education require that all staff and faculty complete annual Title IX training. Throughout the fall 2024 semester, the Title IX and Bias Response Office will be offering in-person and virtual training opportunities for staff and faculty.
Throughout the fall, the Title IX and Bias Response Office will also be offering in-person prevention training opportunities for all members of the campus community.
Students, staff and faculty are reminded that reports of sexual misconduct, harassment, intimate partner/dating violence, stalking, bias and discrimination should be made to the Title IX Office and Bias Response Office.
Public Safety is located in the heart of the Mount Carmel Campus on Bobcat Way in a stand-alone building. Our department is always open to assist our students, faculty, staff and parents.

We strive to achieve this goal through proactive patrol (vehicle, foot, bike and video surveillance), investigations of incidents, victim assistance and educational programs. We provide campus coverage 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
