Toews, who helped lead the Bobcats as assistant captain, became a Stanley Cup Champion on Sunday evening as the Colorado Avalanche defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals.
“It’s such a great accomplishment for Devon and for the Quinnipiac family. The best was when he actually got the Cup," Rand Pecknold, head coach of Quinnipiac's men's ice hockey, told Hearst Connecticut Media. “We’ve had a lot of success as a program."
Toews, who finished eighth in the NHL's voting for the Norris Trophy for league's best defenseman, scored 57 points in 66 regular season games and posted 15 points in 19 post-season games.
The Stanley Cup winner donned Bobcat gold and blue for three seasons in Hamden, with his best coming in his third and final year when he earned 30 points in 40 games. He was selected in the fourth round of the 2014 NHL entry draft and played two seasons for the Islanders.
Toews is the second Bobcat to reach the finals, after Connor Clifton ’17 scored a spot in the finals three years ago.
