While this award was just recently won, the honors given out by NENPA are a reflection of the organization's work from the 2023-2024 academic year.
Alex Martinakova ‘26, a journalism and English double major, held the position of copy editor during the fall 2023 semester and news editor in the spring 2024 semester.
Martinakova served as The Chronicle’s editor in chief during the 2024-2025 academic year, and will be returning to the position for the 2025-2026 academic year. She credits The Chronicle’s then editor in chief Katie Langley for the team’s success.
“Our former editor in chief Katie Langley did an incredible job and I aspire to be even half of a leader she has been.”
In total, the student-led newspaper brought home 14 awards from the NENPA College Journalism Contest, which marked another, yet increasingly successful, year for The Chronicle.
“The Chronicle usually does very well in the annual NENPA Awards, but this year has been exceptionally good," she said.
Martinakova emphasised that this memorable awards season would not have come to fruition without the hard work invested into the paper by the organization's contributors
“Having the opportunity to work with the great staff last year, I saw first-hand just how hard they all worked and how talented everyone was — across all sections of the newspaper. From writing to design and photo, every single person on that e-board deserves this award,” she said.
Hannah Cranston, senior director for campus life, reiterated that the students’ personal drive to inform and educate their community is a contributing factor to the achievement of these awards.
“I'm incredibly excited and proud that The Chronicle has been named the 2024 New England College Newspaper of the Year. This recognition is a testament to the passion, dedication, and leadership our student journalists bring to every issue. They work tirelessly to keep our community informed, and it's amazing to see their efforts celebrated on such a high level," she said.
Following these acomplishments, Martinakova is confident that the incoming executive board will continue to be recognized in the coming awards seasons.
“While this year's e-board is newer, mostly consisting of sophomores and first-years, I am incredibly proud of all of them and I am confident that we can match our accomplishments from last year," she said.
Martinakova’s long-standing passion for The Chronicle is apparent, and is fuel for the organization’s success.
“I have fallen in love with this organization the second my first article got published. The Chronicle taught me most of what I know about writing and I wouldn't be where I am without the support of the previous e-board members," she said. "They taught me everything that gave me the confidence to lead this organization for another year and for that I am incredibly grateful.”
