Representatives from Quinnipiac's School of Nursing and women’s rugby team participated in Wellness Night activities at Hamden’s West Woods Elementary School on Friday, February 28.

Bridget Rich, assistant dean for clinical education and clinical instructor of nursing at Quinnipiac, was joined by students Abigail Crowell and Maverick Hammond.

They presented information on staying healthy and safe, first aid, calling 911 and the importance of sleep hygiene. In addition to dispersing important information, the Quinnipiac nursing contingent helped the elementary students make bracelets with ultraviolet beads that change color in the sun.

“Community engagement is essential in nursing because it allows nurses to actively identify and address community health needs by collaborating with residents, leading to improved access to healthcare, better health outcomes and empowered individuals who can take charge of their well-being by providing education and resources tailored to specific local issues,” Rich said. “Our students are excited to teach students about healthy habits and first aid and are doing so with fun infused.”

Rugby players Kelsey Thomas and Gillian Mason, both juniors, talked about the importance of exercise and led the children through safe rugby drills.

“Being active and having fun is very important for kids,” Mason said. “The more games you can play, the better."

It was the second consecutive year in which Quinnipiac visited West Woods for the event, which was organized by physical education teacher Alan Page. About 100 people registered to attend the event, which featured everything from art therapy to Zumba demonstrations.

“Giving back to the community has always been something that I enjoy,” Crowell said. “I find that this type of event is especially important to take part in because it allows different educational opportunities to be brought to the Hamden residents. It also provides us, QU nursing students, with the opportunity to become more connected with the community and learn more about the people who reside here."

Adyson Maguire, a third grader at West Woods, attended the event with her brother Ayden Maquire, a first grader.

“It’s good to be healthy and it is important to exercise,” Adyson said. “You need to be active.”
