Students develop unique connections with alumni leading New York Islanders’ communications strategy

School of Communications Professor Alexander Laskin recently created an exceptional career development opportunity for his students by taking them to meet Quinnipiac alumni working for the New York Islanders.

In addition to attending a game, students met and spoke with Kimber Auerbach ‘06, senior vice president of communications; Alex Leafer ‘13, senior director of content, production and technology; and Tyler Brosious ‘17, senior director of social media and digital for the Islanders. Both students and alumni shared excellent reviews of the experience.

Students found comfort and optimism in learning about the careers of those who were once in their shoes.

“It’s easy to psych yourself out — to think you aren't doing enough to get where you want to be,” said Alyssa Fox ’29, a sports communications major. “Hearing that someone who has already reached your goal did the same things as you is amazing. Tyler worked for athletics, and he was in QBSN — those are all things I'm a part of. Knowing that I am on the right path is just nice to hear.”

Brocious recognized Quinnipiac for being an important launch point for his career.

“I regularly draw on experiences and lessons learned at Quinnipiac to guide how I lead, communicate and create today with the Islanders,” said Brosious.

Students said that they created bonds that expand further than this field trip as many connected with the alums on LinkedIn and were encouraged to keep in touch in the future.
