“It made me realize how amazing medicine really is,” she said. “I observed in virtually every department surgeries. The work and skill behind each person in the room is a wonderful thing to see. I want to be able to help change lives in the future.”
The program gives students the opportunity to learn about patient treatment, methodology research and ethical concerns in medicine. Students are also given the opportunity to examine surgeries in a variety of departments in the hospital.
“It made me believe that what I am working toward is truly what I want to do for the rest of my life,” she said. “It also made me more motivated to work harder and continue moving toward my goal of going to medical school.”
While in the program, Torosyan shadowed a doctor through level 1 traumas in the emergency department, and researched new software that gathers data from all the trauma information recorded.
“This summer I met wonderful physicians, medical students, DOs and PAs,” she said. “Building connection with them and spending my days learning from them is the most beneficial part that this experience offered me.”
Torosyan encourages other students who are interested to take part in this program because it gives students the opportunity to explore their interests, she said.
“Do it,” she said. “This was the most educational, motivating and amazing summer I have ever had.”
