QU EMS was honored for “partnership and support in community-based medicine,” in particular for collaborating with the Hamden Police and Fire departments to offer a summer program that was aimed at inspiring careers in public safety.
“This award means a lot, especially since we’ve established such a strong connection with the Hamden Fire Department,” QU EMS member Molly DeMeo said.
In July, the university hosted a free, one-week program to teach and train Hamden’s leaders of tomorrow on the Mount Carmel Campus.
During the week, Hamden High School students learned about public safety through classroom instruction and hands-on interactions, including CPR and first aid training, handling a high-pressure water hose, and discovering the sophisticated tools of the Fire Department's mobile command vehicle and armored vehicle.
In recognizing Quinnipiac, Hamden Fire Capt. Julio Lopes praised the leadership and advisors of QU EMS as well as Janelle Chiasera, a professor of biomedical sciences who was dean of the School of Health Sciences when the idea for the camp was proposed. He said the summer program came together at break-neck speed.
“You didn't just help us create a program; you helped us create a model for how universities and emergency services can work together to serve their communities,” Lopes said. “You see, when we talk about the fire service and our partnerships it's not just about fighting fires or responding to emergencies – it's about building bridges, creating opportunities and inspiring those around us.
“It's about institutions like Quinnipiac University stepping up to make a real difference in their community,” he added. “This program isn't just a success story – it's a blueprint for what we can achieve when we dare to dream big and work together.”
Becca Lucas, a QU EMS faculty adviser, accepted the award on behalf of the organization.
“It is such an honor,” she said. “Our students do a great job of running the EMS organization on campus, and we have such an excellent relationship with both the Hamden Fire and Police departments.”
In addition to the honoring QU EMS group, student member Brooke Boisvert received individual recognition for her help during a cardiac arrest call while doing a ride along with Hamden FD in September.
“Having an extra set of hands on that day allowed us to control the tempo,” Hamden Fire Capt. Michael Dowling said. “This was a great experience for Brooke. It was a great team effort that led to a positive outcome.”
