During their QU in NYC internship semester, students will engage in hands-on learning at top communications and media companies, build professional networks with industry leaders, and explore all the city that never sleeps has to offer.
With related coursework, curated meetups with seasoned alumni working in New York City, and a calendar of special arts and cultural experiences, QU in NYC will support motivated incoming School of Communications third-year, fourth-year and graduate students who have the hustle to land internships at leading NYC firms.
Program eligibility requires a minimum 3.0 GPA and 57 completed credits and participants are required to secure an internship in advance of the semester. Students can inquire now to enroll in QU in NYC for the Fall of 2026.
School of Communications Dean Nadine Barnett Cosby said QU in NYC continues the school’s focus of helping students build strong connections in and out of the classroom, engage in opportunities to apply their knowledge, gain hands-on experience, and prepare for their first job.
“It embodies what makes the school such a special place for our students. We focus on experiential opportunities that aren’t just an experience — they are part of building a career and preparing them for careers. QU in NYC is going to add to that cadre of experiences we already offer,” said Barnett Cosby.
On the West Coast, Quinnipiac in Los Angeles (QU in LA) is in its 11th year of creating a springboard for School of Communications interns to kickstart a variety of communications careers in the heart of America’s entertainment industry. Students live, work and learn from veteran industry professionals and mentors as they forge important career connections and experience the arts and cultural landscape of Los Angeles.
As the epicenter for world-class media, entertainment, journalism, advertising and public relations, career opportunities in New York City closely mirror the School of Communications curriculum, said Barnett Cosby.
“By putting students right in the heart of New York City, we’re giving them a chance to connect directly with industry leaders, and they can apply what they’ve learned in the classroom to real-world settings. That builds the kinds of professional networks that can launch their careers,” Barnett Cosby said.
At the School of Communications, students are exposed to a combination of high-touch resources, high-tech facilities and a high-powered location. The school’s dedicated faculty and staff provide resources and opportunities for students to acquire and master the soft skills of professional presentation as well as the special, increasingly technical, hard skills required by media and communications employers.
As a result, Quinnipiac students have a proven track record of entering internships well-prepared for their real-world experience.
“One of the overarching themes that we get from employers who have worked with our interns is how professional the students are, and how qualified they are in terms of their skill sets; because they’re getting that knowledge in our classrooms,” said Barnett Cosby.
Through QU in NYC, Bobcats will put abilities learned at the School of Communications to the test and have the reward of seeing their skills make a difference in a top-notch professional setting.
“The internship and coursework are important, but I think QU in NYC is about creating an immersive experience where students can see the impact of their skills while actually working for a professional organization. They can test their creativity,” said Barnett Cosby.
QU in NYC deepens the internship experience with support and special programs. At the School of Communications, a new, three credit New York media and culture class will complement the QU in NYC experience and internships.
With its unparalleled energy and cultural diversity, NYC and its five boroughs offer a wealth of unique opportunities for continued growth and cultural enrichment. QU in NYC interns will have the chance to take trips to explore museums, attend events and discover the essence of the city, said Lila Carney, director of career development in the School of Communications.
“Our students have been interning in New York for years, but what we wanted to do was to be able to make it a truly immersive experience so they can get that real-world experience of living and working in the city. QU in NYC gives them that chance to give it a test drive,” said Carney.
Currently, there are more than 1,100 School of Communications alumni in the NYC area. As part of QU in NYC, the School of Communications is collaborating with Quinnipiac’s Office of Development and Alumni Affairs to partner with alumni, creating impactful opportunities for students to connect with professionals imbued with the Bobcat spirit.
“New York City is the number one desired work destination for our current students, and it’s the number one city where our alumni are congregating. At the School of Communications, we want students to get as many internships and meet as many people as possible, and I think this is a great way for them to do that in the places where they want to work,” said Carney.
By living, working, and learning in this world hub of global communications, Bobcats will be set up to successfully launch their careers in a fast-paced, top-market city. Barnett Cosby said students will also come away from their QU in NYC experience with a boost of confidence.
“I think one of the most exciting professional environments in the world is a really great testing ground to build and grow your confidence as a student,” said Barnett Cosby. “I look at it as both giving access and an edge that they need to step into their next chapters or their careers with not only momentum and experience, but with confidence.”
