Courtney McGinnis receives grant to investigate pollution in the Quinnipiac River

Professor Courtney McGinnis has received a $26,646 grant from the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven to continue investigating pollution in the Quinnipiac River.

The foundation’s Quinnipiac River Fund was created “to improve the environmental quality of the Quinnipiac River and the New Haven Harbor."

McGinnis, a biology professor, said her research project entails collecting water samples from locations in Hamden, Meriden, North Haven and Wallingford. McGinnis and her research assistants will analyze the samples for the presence of hydrocarbons, pesticides, phthalates or plasticizers, and other water quality parameters.

Additionally, in collaboration with Priscilla Encarnacao at the Hopkins School, the funds will be used to support environmental clean-up efforts on state property bordering the Quinnipiac River in North Haven, McGinnis said.

“I am passionate about this continued research as it allows me to be a good steward of the land, where I live and work,” McGinnis added. “This research project is important to understand the overall health of the Quinnipiac River, while the clean-up efforts are essential in reducing the amount of pollutants that enter the river.”
