A new report finds that a significant gap persists between the skills employers seek and the qualifications of recent college graduates, a challenge fueled by rapid technological advancements and evolving job requirements.

The study, “Closing the Skills Gap with Dynamic Partnerships,” produced by the Quinnipiac University School of Business, AACSB International (AACSB) and Deloitte Consulting, underscores the importance of adaptability and critical thinking—so-called durable skills"—in helping workers keep pace with industry demands.

The report emphasizes that traditional workforce development models are no longer sufficient. Instead, it calls for deeper collaboration between universities and employers to ensure graduates are prepared for the modern workplace.

“Workplace readiness isn’t just about technical proficiency,” said Holly Raider, dean of Quinnipiac University’s School of Business. “Young professionals are telling us they need to develop problem-solving skills in high-pressure environments while continuously learning new technologies.”

The research suggests that businesses should share insights on skills trends and work closely with faculty to shape curricula, while universities must develop more agile programs and expand flexible learning pathways. Students, the report notes, also have a role to play in building professional networks and applying their skills in real-world settings.

The findings are based on insights from early-career employees, who reported a need for stronger preparation in navigating ambiguity, problem-solving under time constraints and giving and receiving feedback.

Here is the report.
