Dutra’s roots extend overseas in Portugal, where both sets of grandparents immigrated to the U.S. in search of new opportunities. Her parents were both born in the United States, and after meeting, her father enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, spending most of his time in Italy where Dutra’s mother joined him. Eventually they returned to the U.S. where her father built a career as an executive director of employee relations, and her mother as a quality assurance manager.
Dutra enjoyed finance in high school, specifically stocks and the impact of various factors on the market. This led to her major of choice of finance, in turn leading to her decision in picking a college.
Upon enrollment at Quinnipiac, Dutra’s family was proud of her decision to further her academics and professional development.
“They were very excited and proud. My parents and grandparents didn't have the same opportunities I have had and I'm very grateful for it,” said Dutra. “Out of all of the schools we toured, Quinnipiac always stood out to them; they really wanted me to come here, and I really wanted to go here.”
Dutra is extremely proud of her involvement in the 1929 Fund; the first-year advisory board; the Catholic Chaplaincy; and Bobcat Academy.
“Bobcat Academy has been huge for me. They encourage you to take two classes, one in the fall and one in the spring,” Dutra said. “The one in the fall is about time management skills and how to better them, then the one in the spring is about journaling.”
“Another big help has been Chief Experience Officer Tom Ellett. He has always been very helpful with any questions I've had and connected me with a lot of amazing people that I really appreciate,” Dutra said.
Through this journey she has learned a lot about herself, most notably, a newfound independence.
“In college you don't have anyone looking over your shoulder telling you what to do so you have to hold yourself accountable,” said Dutra. “It also is scary putting yourself out there and trying to get involved at first, but it's been so rewarding.”
Dutra understands the pressure and nerves that come with being a first-generation student. She urges other first-generations students who may be nervous about applying to college to understand there is support along the way.
“It's totally normal to feel that way. I know I was definitely nervous before coming here,” Dutra said. “But people want to be a resource for you. They want to see you succeed and if you put yourself out there and use those resources, I promise you will be more than OK. Say 'yes' to all opportunities presented to you, try new things even if you fail or don't like it just try it out.”
