Pina Violano

Pina Violano, clinical associate professor of nursing and director of community engagement, has been named chair of Educational Programs Oversight Committee (EPOC) for the American Trauma Society (ATS).

The EPOC was recently created to ensure that the ATS continues excellence, relevance, and integrity of educational offerings. Violano’s role consists of overseeing the creation, development, and management of educational programs and materials for the organization.

“This role includes maintaining existing programs, designing new ones, and ensuring that educational content is consistent with the ATS's mission to prevent injury and improve trauma care. The committee collaborates with other ATS committees, such as the Injury Prevention Committee, to produce educational materials, like those for National Trauma Awareness Month,” said Violano.

Violano aims to use her previous experience as an educator to lead the ATS programs to excellence.

“I am honored and privileged to be given the opportunity to continue to serve the American Trauma Society and the Board of Directors. As an experienced clinician and public health advocate, I will work to integrate comprehensive, trauma-informed principles across our initiatives, focusing not only on trauma critical care but also on equitable prevention strategies and improved long-term outcomes for survivors. I am committed to leveraging my experience as an educator to support the ATS's mission by developing innovative training programs and advocating for policies that save lives and empower survivors,” Violano said.

Violano has many goals and aspirations for her new role as chair. She will familiarize herself with the current programs ATS offers and find ways to improve them.

“My goal is to begin with a formal review of each of the educational programs offered by the ATS. This will include a review of curriculum as it relates to best practices and industry standards as well as a formal review of instructor ability to deliver content and effectively engage our next generation of trauma professionals.”
