Amber Kolb ’19 recently won the American Bar Association’s prestigious Howard C. Schwab Memorial Essay Contest with her submission, “Influencing a New Generation: Guardians’ Duties to Protect the Interests and Safety of Children on Social Media.”

Kolb is studying at Northeastern University School of Law after earning her bachelor’s degree in English with a minor in philosophy from Quinnipiac’s College of Arts and Sciences.

“I hope my essay positively contributes to the discussion regarding children’s rights,” said Kolb. “After joking with my friends that we could become influencers on social media, I realized that I could write about children on social media and the lack of legal protections for children in entertainment.”

Kolb said that her love of readying drove her to pursue law and that her interest in understanding the law and human rights developed over time.

“My background in the humanities helped me bolster my communication skills and stand out during the competitive on-campus interviewing process with big law firms,” said Kolb. “My classes helped me refine my writing and logical reasoning skills, and the mentorship and guidance from my professors were immeasurable. I hope my story inspires students to take more humanities-focused classes.”
