“Winning this title feels even more special knowing I get to carry the spirit of Quinnipiac with me,” Kumar said. “The support from the faculty, my peers and the community has been overwhelming in the best way.”
Kumar’s journey to the Miss Connecticut stage is not only grounded in performance but also fueled by purpose. Kumar is the founder of The Gold Ribbon Project, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit she launched in high school to raise awareness and funding for pediatric cancer research, a cause close to her heart. As Miss Connecticut, Kumar is determined to use her platform to advocate for families affected by child cancer and to inspire the next generation of young leaders.
“As Miss Connecticut, I am passionate about using my platform to amplify these voices, educate the public, and inspire others to join the fight against pediatric cancer,” said Kumar. “I’m committed to making a meaningful impact throughout my reign.”
While pursuing her graduate degree at Quinnipiac, Kumar balanced rigorous academics with her pageant commitments, volunteer work and research. Her passion for pediatric oncology was evident both in and out of the classroom.
“Cayla reached out because of her strong interest in cancer, especially pediatric cancer,” said Ann Samarakkody, assistant professor of biomedical sciences. “She was my first student and did an incredible job learning cancer biology and applying it meaningfully. Cayla is kind, fiercely herself, and has an incredible ability to bring people together.”
Professor Samarakkody mentored Kumar through both coursework and hands-on research in her lab, which focuses on DNA damage repair pathways. Under this mentorship Kumar learned the scientific foundations necessary for her eventual goal of attending medical school and becoming a pediatric oncologist.
“Through her journey to become Miss Hamden and now Miss Connecticut, she always had her friends and classmates around her,” Professor Samarakkody said. “She prioritized her academics while also being a bright presence in the lab, classroom and beyond.”
Kumar emphasizes that her preparation for Miss America, where she will represent Connecticut on the national stage, is as much mental as it is physical.
“Like any major competition, it starts with believing you are deserving of the opportunity,” Kumar said. “I’m staying grounded, refining my Bollywood dance talent, prioritizing my health, and constantly reminding myself why I started — to inspire others and advocate for causes I care deeply about.”
In the days following her win, Kumar has been active in media appearances including a feature on Great Day Connecticut. She is also preparing to take The Gold Ribbon Project statewide through advocacy events and community outreach.
Kumar sees her graduate year at Quinnipiac to be an experience she describes as serendipitous.
“Quinnipiac has been a second chance for me — academically and personally. I pushed myself beyond my comfort zone, and in doing so, found the best version of myself,” Kumar reflected. “Quinnipiac gave me the confidence to lead with purpose and believe in the impact I can have.”
She attributes many of the skills she brought to the Miss Connecticut stage — critical thinking, effective communication, time management and leadership to her time at Quinnipiac. She also encourages current students to pursue their passions alongside academics.
“Extracurriculars aren't just a break from the classroom, they can be your source of energy and motivation,” Kumar said. “Find something you love, and don't be afraid to chase it.”
As Kumar prepares for Miss America, she remains rooted in her academic mission and service mindset. Kumar continues to inspire through her work and carries with her the spirit of Quinnipiac every step of the way.
“I hope a little girl out there sees me and thinks, ‘Maybe that could be me too,’” said Kumar. “I was that little girl once. And now, I get to be that woman — not just in a crown, but with a purpose.”
